Safeguarding Indigenous knowledge in the Marine Park: The Story created by Dr Sue Pillans

Client: Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority

Challenge:

To better incorporate Indigenous knowledge into the management of the Great Barrier Reef and create protocols and guidelines for information sharing.

Our role:

We are leading the consortium to assist the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, first to establish a culturally robust and appropriate framework for developing data sharing agreements with Traditional Owners; and, secondly, to negotiate data sharing agreements between the Authority and Traditional Owner groups. The aim is to ensure there are mutual benefits returned to both parties in exchange for Indigenous knowledge, inclusive of copyright, intellectual property, respect and recognition, and based on international best practice.

Outcome:

We are currently negotiating four initial agreements that will become the template for future agreements.
